Information for new volunteers.

The Kings Lynn Talking Newspaper (KLTN) association also called Visionlink records a weekly edition of local news onto memory sticks and distributes these, by free postage for the blind scheme, through Royal Mail. It is available free to any visually impaired person. Recordings are made on Monday nights at the equipment centre of the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind, NNAB, in North Lynn at 7 pm and last for about one hour. Teams of four readers take it in turns reading the news while it is recorded to a computer by a recording engineer. The association is run entirely by volunteers and receives no funding from any statutory body. It has been in operation since 1980. Volunteers are required as
1: Editors. To provide a weekly edit of the local newspaper, normally the Lynn News, into a script for the readers.
2: Readers. To read the prepared script (approx.. 60-70 minutes per session). Normally in teams of four taking turns to read. At the moment readers attend recording sessions about every four to five weeks; normally on Monday evenings. Most people can read aloud well enough for recording but if you are uncertain a recording trial can be arranged.
3: Recording Engineers. To control and ensure good quality of the actual recording and produce a master memory stick. Some computer knowledge is required but the software is easy to use and full training would be given.
4: Production Team. Tasks include sorting returned mail packets on Monday morning and preparing the address labels for the next edition to go out on Tuesday. Others will erase content on the returned memory sticks and then duplicate sufficient copies of the new edition to be sent out on the Tuesday. These are day time tasks at the moment.
Timings are different on National holidays.
Volunteers are encouraged to try different tasks so they could cover for holidays etc.
Planning the roster and keeping track of the listeners is carried out by a small committee of trustees.
At present with lockdown and social distancing normal operation is restricted. Please get in touch if you want to help when the situation improves.
